House 2, 3, 4, 5, 6… is a flexible-density housing project in the Mount Washington neighborhood of Los Angeles. A single cooperative is developing two adjacent parcels with an interest in mixing tenants in variable configurations as they live on the property for different durations. By taking advantage of the zoning bonuses for ADU’s in combination with the allowable uses for short-term rentals, each parcel can host as many as three living units simultaneously, for a total of six units across both lots. Units can be joined and used in various combinations both across floors and between buildings.

The stairs in each building are conceived as “locks” in the sense of allowing or impeding flow between levels.

Doors can be shut and locked at each level in ways that both enclose the unit and incorporate the stair itself as useable space.

(The first and third floors of the north building, for instance, are joined by a lofted office space on the second floor that belongs to the lower level when the units are separated by a locked door.)

Between buildings, the plans of the landscape align with interior circulation.

Residents can choose to live in pavilions between lots, transiting green space between living and sleeping quarters, for instance.
