Sited on a hillside more than 200 feet above a Maui beach, the Slater residence is a 1,000 square foot vacation home. While the majority of the house is executed in a modernist vocabulary — open plan, large expanses of glass, and a controlled material palette — a large sunscreen wraps the structure pursues a different agenda, varying in height and density to saturate the ground plane with a variety of lighting effects. In this sense the more contemporary aspects of the house are soft or stealth, operating in a material without substance (light) that alters and saturates and allows the more conventional structure to remain unthreatened.
