Light 1 is an inexpensive, mass-produced diffuser for use with conventional lighting fixtures. The product is made of a perforated, folded aluminum sheet that is designed to flex open slightly and wrap over existing standard T5 fluorescent tube fixtures. By varying the pattern of perforations, the normally harsh light becomes a softer glow. Because of the thin aluminum sheet stock and use of a repetitive industrial stamping process, the cost of the wrapper is less than the industrial grade fixture to which it attaches and can be produced in any length matching standard T5 tube dimensions. Its low cost allows this product to penetrate markets where conventional architectural design is a wasteful luxury – hallways of institutional buildings, mid-grade retail ceilings, and industrial shop floors requiring energy efficient, ecologically sound lighting solutions are all viable candidates for installation.

Instead of aiming to create a beautiful light fixture, Light 1 aims to create a beautiful method of light fixturing with an inexpensive, mass-produced component that can be grafted onto conventional lighting fixtures. Light leaks through the graphic pattern of the diagonally biased perforations impel a “soft attitude” or gentle edginess into the surrounding space – a kind of architecture without architecture that reorganizes space through the volume of its repetition as instead of the fixed construction of singular design gestures.
